Wilson Farm Botanical Ice Cream
Located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Wilson Farm specializes in cultivating herbs and botanicals with restorative, medicinal properties. Owners Lindsay and Brendan have traditionally crafted their harvests into therapeutic teas, powders, and tonics. In recent years, they expanded their offerings by pairing their farm-grown botanicals with local ingredients to create custom, botanical-infused ice creams. When they approached me, they were ready to give their homemade ice cream a unique visual identity of its own.

In the development of this project, it was important that we kept a visual through line between the larger Wilson Farm parent brand and the visual identity of Wilson Farm Botanical ice cream. The farm uses a custom word mark based on an old hand painted sign, which we decided to carry through to the secondary brand. The brands’ color palettes also share two shades in common, ensuring that there is consistency and cohesion between the two.

One of the foundational motives behind developing this branding was getting the product packaged and available for distribution. After building out the initial foundation of the brand, we moved on to developing a set of illustrations inspired by vintage folk art. Because the ice cream is made with care by hand, it was important for these graphics to possess a sense of human craftsmanship as well. These were hand drawn and then expanded into a repeating symmetrical design that reads as a tapestry of the process, ingredients, knowledge and care contained within each pint.
Because the flavor offerings are rotating and based on availability of seasonal ingredients, we wanted to keep the design for the pint flexible. Intentional negative space was left on both the pint’s body and lid to leave room for information to be stamped or written. For the three initial flavors included in distribution, we developed custom branded word marks that could be stamped onto the packaging.
